about
“Serdica” Linear Notes by Zixxth:
“Serdica” is a story about an unapologetic and cruel display of domination over the enemy. It is a story of how the Serdica fortress (nowadays Sofia, Capital of Bulgaria) was conquered by khan Krum, making it a part of the Bulgarian Empire.
In the spring of year 809 after an attempt of negotiation followed by an ambush from the Byzantine side, khan Krum led his army to Serdica. He performed an ancient battle ritual, spilling the blood of fifteen animals on the city gates in the name of god Tangra.
Terrified by the view, the emperor's deputy begged for mercy and safe escort while surrendering Serdica in return. Krum agreed, and when the gates opened he slayed, raped and burned over 6,000 of the Roman army - thus leaving a message to the emperor Nikephoros I and establishing the Bulgarian strength and harsh spirit for decades to come.
This was the first song written by Gods of Ancient on our first rehearsal on 12.09.2020 and will be our first single as well - hammering our belief of paying respect to history, lineage and the realm unknown.”

An ambitious, yet tightly executed, death metal debut that trades in crushing riffs, funereal effects, and even the odd Shakespeare quote. Bandcamp New & Notable Jan 25, 2023
